The use of lead nitrate has become widespread in gold cyanidation to improve leaching kinetics and increase gold recovery since the 1990s.

Improve Gold Yield and Lower Cyanide Consumption
Lead nitrate reduces cyanide consumption through two complementary mechanisms:
- Precipitation of lead sulphide (PbS) on sulphide minerals, forming a sparingly soluble layer that further inhibits cyanide decomposition.
- Formation of lead hydroxide (Pb(OH)2) layer on pyrite, which passivates the surface and suppresses cyanide-consuming side reactions.
Optimise Lead Nitrate Consumption
Thiocyanate (SCN-) levels in solution serve as a reliable indicator of sulphide oxidation.
- Monitoring SCN- enables precise lead nitrate dosing, optimising reagent efficiency and minimizing excess addition.
